Modder’s Guide

Planning on modifying your Ploopy device? Great! We hope that you enjoy the process of customizing your device as much as you’ll enjoy using it.

Please read the following guide for a few tips to help make your modification journey a pleasant one.

Before You Begin

Please read through this guide carefully before you open your device or do anything to modify it.

In particular, it’s important that you read through this entire blog post if you purchase a fully-assembled device from us with the intent of modding it. It will explain how we attach chips to PCBs. It’ll also tell you how important it is to be very careful with the PCB and any chips attached to it.

Required Skills

We expect that anybody who modifies our devices, in any way, have the following skills (and access to the requisite equipment to employ them):

  • Soldering
  • 3D-printing
  • Use of hand tools such as screwdrivers

We also expect modders to have troubleshooting abilities, familiarity with electronics, and a general aptitude for operating without explicit guidance.

Warranty

Our warranty is such that we will deliver to you, in working order, all that we explicitly promise. If parts arrive broken, or PCBs don’t function, or things aren’t the way they’re explained on our official shop pages, we’ll make that right.

That said, we cannot and do not warranty modifications that you make to your device. The reason for this is straightforward: we can’t make any promises about work that isn’t done by us.

We will deliver to you everything that we promise, but the second that you modify your device, that’s the end of your warranty.

Does that mean we won’t help you if things go wrong? Of course not! We will endeavour to directly assist where we can, and provide resources to help you get things in working order. It won’t be warranty service, but it’ll be the best that we can do.

Further Resources

Our Github is a great resource, with the assembly documentation and photos readily available.

The Discord server and subreddit are great places to get additional feedback on tricky modifications or chat with the folks who developed the mod you’re trying to implement.

Feel free to email us if you’re feeling stuck, and we’ll see what we can do to help out.

Have Fun!

Modifying your Ploopy device is one of the great things about owning an open-source design. We’ve provided our supporters with complete freedom in how they use their design, and we hope that you’re able to capitalize on this freedom to create a device that works perfectly for you.

So, have fun with it!
